Science
Intent
At Five Acres Primary School, we aim to inspire curiosity, creativity and a lifelong love of science. Through an engaging and knowledge-rich curriculum, pupils develop scientific understanding, enquiry skills and confidence in exploring the world around them. We want every child to see themselves as a scientist, equipped with the knowledge and skills to make sense of today’s world and contribute positively to tomorrow’s future.
Implementation
Science is taught through a carefully sequenced curriculum from EYFS to Year 6, using the Plymouth Science scheme alongside our mixed-age curriculum. Learning builds progressively over time, ensuring key knowledge and scientific skills are revisited, reinforced and extended. Children learn through practical investigation, observation, discussion and scientific enquiry, developing both substantive knowledge and working scientifically skills. Regular retrieval practice, assessment and opportunities to apply learning in meaningful contexts help children make strong connections and deepen understanding.
Impact
Children leave Five Acres with secure scientific knowledge, strong enquiry skills and the confidence to question, investigate and explain the world around them. They demonstrate curiosity, resilience and a genuine enthusiasm for science. Through learning together, growing together and thriving together, our pupils are well prepared for the next stage of their education and inspired to become the scientists, innovators and problem-solvers of the future.
