Music
At Five Acres Primary School, our music curriculum reflects our vision of Learning Together, Growing Together, Thriving Together. We aim to inspire a lifelong appreciation of music by providing opportunities for all children to perform, compose, listen, evaluate and express themselves creatively. Through music, pupils develop confidence, collaboration and cultural understanding while exploring a wide range of musical styles, traditions and genres. We use the Sing Up curriculum from Reception to Year 6, adapting learning to meet the needs and interests of our children.
Intent- Learning Together
We want every child to become a confident and enthusiastic musician. Our curriculum develops pupils' musical knowledge, skills and understanding through singing, performing, composing and listening. Children learn to appreciate a diverse range of music while developing their own musical tastes and creative individuality. In the Early Years, music plays a vital role in supporting language, communication, physical coordination and social-emotional development.
Implementation- Growing Together
Music is taught through the Sing Up curriculum, a comprehensive scheme that builds musical skills progressively from Reception to Year 6. Lessons combine singing, listening, performing, composing and improvising, enabling children to learn music through practical experiences. Pupils explore music from different cultures, traditions and historical periods while developing their understanding of key musical elements such as pitch, tempo, dynamics, rhythm, timbre, texture and structure. Children regularly perform both individually and as part of a group, building confidence and teamwork as their musical skills grow.
What is Sing Up?
Sing Up is a nationally recognised music curriculum designed to make music accessible, engaging and enjoyable for all children. Through a carefully sequenced programme, pupils develop their singing, musicianship, creativity and performance skills year by year. Lessons are practical, inclusive and interactive, helping children learn through doing, performing and exploring music together. The curriculum introduces children to a diverse range of musical genres and cultures, ensuring they gain both musical knowledge and an appreciation of the rich musical world around them.
Impact- Thriving Together
Children leave Five Acres as confident performers, thoughtful listeners and creative composers. They can discuss and evaluate music using appropriate musical vocabulary, perform with increasing accuracy and expression, and demonstrate a secure understanding of how music is created and communicated. Through their musical experiences, pupils develop confidence, creativity, resilience and a lifelong appreciation of music that supports them both in and beyond primary school.
