Modern Foreign Language (French)
At Five Acres Primary School, we believe that learning a modern foreign language helps children develop confidence, curiosity and an understanding of the wider world. Through learning French, pupils gain the skills to communicate in another language while developing an appreciation of different cultures and traditions.
Our MFL curriculum supports our vision of Learning Together, Growing Together and Thriving Together. Children learn collaboratively, build confidence through practice and discussion, and develop resilience as language learners.
Intent
We aim for children to:
- Develop confidence in listening, speaking, reading and writing French.
- Build and apply a growing vocabulary and understanding of grammar.
- Develop accurate pronunciation and communication skills.
- Understand and appreciate French culture and traditions.
- Foster curiosity and a positive attitude towards language learning.
Implementation
French is taught in Key Stage 2 using the Salut! scheme of work. The curriculum is carefully sequenced to build knowledge and skills over time. Children learn through songs, stories, games, conversations and practical activities, with regular opportunities to revisit and apply previously taught vocabulary and language structures. Lessons develop children's listening, speaking, reading and writing skills while introducing them to life and culture in French-speaking countries.
Impact
By the end of primary school, pupils have a secure foundation in French and the confidence to communicate using familiar language. They develop an understanding of French culture, demonstrate positive attitudes towards language learning and are well prepared for further language study at secondary school.
Assessment is ongoing through regular check-ins and end-of-unit assessments, enabling teachers to identify progress, address misconceptions and plan next steps in learning.
