Learning Together. Growing Together. Thriving Together.

Design and Technology

Intent

At Five Acres Primary School, Design and Technology equips children with the knowledge, skills and creativity to engage positively with the designed world. Through our vision of Learning Together, Growing Together, Thriving Together, pupils become confident designers, innovators and problem-solvers who understand how technology can improve lives and shape the future. They learn how products are designed, made and evaluated, developing the creativity and resilience needed to make a positive difference.

Implementation

Design and Technology is taught through practical, hands-on projects that develop children's understanding of structures, mechanisms, textiles, electrical systems, food and nutrition, and computer programming. Pupils follow the design process of research, design, make, test, evaluate and improve, applying their knowledge to solve real-life problems. Learning is carefully sequenced, building skills and knowledge over time while making links with subjects such as science, maths, history, geography and art.

Impact

Children leave Five Acres as creative, reflective and resourceful learners. They can design, make and evaluate products with confidence, think critically about the world around them and understand the role of technology in everyday life. Through regular opportunities to refine and improve their ideas, pupils develop the practical skills, resilience and innovation needed for future learning and life beyond primary school. Achievement is assessed through composite outcomes at the end of each unit.
