Learning Together. Growing Together. Thriving Together.

Art

Intent

At Five Acres Primary School, we believe that art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. Our curriculum engages, inspires and challenges pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art. Through our vision of Learning Together, Growing Together, Thriving Together, pupils develop their creative and imaginative talents while gaining an understanding of how art reflects and shapes history, culture and society. We aim to nurture confident, thoughtful and resilient artists who appreciate the impact of creativity on the world around them.

Implementation

Our art curriculum is taught through a two-year rolling programme and is enriched by the study of artists, architects and designers from a range of cultures and periods. Pupils investigate and evaluate creative outcomes from the past and present, developing a secure understanding of the diverse disciplines within art, craft and design.

Children experience a wide range of media and techniques as they move through school. In EYFS, they explore materials such as paint, pencils, chalks, pastels, clay and collage. Across Key Stages 1 and 2, pupils develop their ideas through focused lessons, cross-curricular links and opportunities to work in both 2D and 3D. They learn and apply skills relating to colour, pattern, texture, shape and form while creating individual and collaborative pieces on a variety of scales.

Impact

By the time pupils leave Five Acres, they are creative, reflective and confident learners who can think critically about art and design. They can evaluate their own work, identify ways to improve and apply an increasingly sophisticated range of artistic skills and techniques. Through their learning, pupils develop an appreciation of how creativity contributes to cultural, social and economic life, both locally and globally. Achievement is assessed through composite outcomes at the end of each unit, enabling children to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and understanding they have gained throughout their artistic journey.
